Charlie's Fleet Street career encompassed three national daily papers. He was the managing editor of The Independent where he was also the founding sports editor and the home editor. At the Guardian he was the media editor, the Saturday editor, travel editor and a sports writer, covering the Tour de France, the LA Olympic Games and lots of football. At the Daily Mail he was a features executive. He started his journalistic career at the Liverpool Daily Post.
He was a non-executive director of Editorial Intelligence and a non executive director of the CN Group for over 20 years.
Charlie spent two weeks in the summer of 2012 as a Games Maker volunteer at the Olympic Games and four weeks in the summer of 2002 riding a Harley across the United States. When in Las Vegas he went into a magic shop and has been hooked ever since. He is a Member of The Magic Circle and writes features and interviews major magicians for The Magic Circular magazine. He is a fan of Carlisle United, his home town football team. He lives in London and Aldeburgh with his wife. He has two children who are off the payroll and married. He has a small share in a beautiful pub in the west of the Lake District, the Woolpack Inn in Eskdale, which you should visit.
